Summary of No Longer Human Summary

In Osamu Dazai’s “No Longer Human,” the protagonist, who sees himself as a failure, narrates a seemingly normal life despite feeling unable to comprehend human beings. Oba Yozo’s efforts to reconcile himself with the world around him begin as a youngster, continue through high school, when he disguises himself as a “clown” to hide his alienation, and climax in an adult suicide attempt. He portrays life’s accidental cruelties as well as fleeting moments of human connection and affection without becoming emotional. No Longer Human is the last completed work of Osamu Dazai, one of Japan’s most important authors (1909–1948). It is semi-autobiographical. The book has come to “mirror the thinking of youth” from postwar Japan to the postmodern world of technology (Hiroshi Ando, The Mainichi Daily News). No Longer Human is a fascinating look at how a person gets shut off from society, and it is still one of Japan’s best-selling novels.
