About Ikigai English Book
This book was born on a rainy night in Tokyo, when its creators met for the first time in one of the city’s teeny-tiny bars.
We’d both read one another’s work but had never met because of the hundreds of kilometres that divide Barcelona and Japan’s capital.
Then a mutual acquaintance introduced us, sparking a friendship that has led to this project and appears to be destined to last a lifetime.
What is the purpose of my existence? Is it more important to just live longer, or should I strive for something greater? Why do some individuals know exactly what they want and have a strong desire to pursue it, while others are lost in a sea of indecision? The enigmatic term “ikigai” came up during our talk at some point. This Japanese notion, which loosely translates as “the joy of continuously being active,” is similar to logotherapy but takes it a step further.
It also seems to be one explanation for the Japanese people’s amazing longevity, particularly on the island of Okinawa, where there are 24.55 people over the age of 100 for every 100,000 residents, greatly above the world norm.
