A Raisin in the Sun Summary

In the 1950s, A Raisin in the Sun depicts a few weeks in the lives of the Youngers, a Black family living on Chicago’s South Side. The Youngers are about to receive a $10,000 insurance cheque as the play begins. This money comes from Mr. Younger’s life insurance policy, which he had before he died. Each of the family’s adult members has a notion of what he or she wants to do with the money. Mama, the family’s matriarch, want to purchase a home in order to realise a goal she and her husband cherished.

Walter Lee, Mama’s son, would rather put the money in a booze shop with his pals. He feels the investment will permanently address the family’s financial troubles. Ruth, Walter’s wife, agrees with Mama and hopes that she and Walter can give their son, Travis, more room and opportunities. Finally, Walter’s sister and Mama’s daughter, Beneatha, wants to utilise the funds to pay for her medical school tuition. She also wishes that her relatives were less interested in blending into white society. Beneatha, on the other hand, seeks to figure out who she is by looking back in time and to Africa.

The Youngers battle as the play continues over their different ambitions. Ruth realises she is pregnant, but she is concerned that having the child would put more financial strain on her family. Mama makes a down payment on a home for the entire family after Walter ignores Ruth’s statement that she is contemplating abortion. She feels that having a larger, brighter home will benefit them all.

This home is located in Clybourne Park, which is a mostly white area. When the Youngers’ prospective neighbors learn of their impending move, they send Mr. Lindner of the Clybourne Park Improvement Association to offer the Youngers money in exchange for their continued absence. Even when Walter loses the remainder of the money ($6,500) to his buddy Willy Harris, who convinces Walter to invest in the booze shop and then steals his money, the Youngers deny the arrangement.

Meanwhile, Beneatha rejects her suitor, George Murchison, whom she says is shallow and unconcerned about racial issues. Following that, her Nigerian lover, Joseph Asagai, proposes to her and wants her to earn a medical degree and travel to Africa with him (Beneatha does not make her choice before the end of the play). The Youngers finally leave the flat, achieving a long-held family desire. Their future is unknown and perhaps perilous, but they are hopeful and eager to make a better life for themselves. They feel that if they keep together as a family and commit to pursue their objectives, they will be successful.
